1. Today is the 72nd death anniversary of ‘Kabiguru’ Rabindranath Tagore. Rabindranath Tagore, sobriquet Gurudev, was a Bengali poet, philosopher, artist, playwright, composer and novelist.
2. The Union Cabinet has given nod to the proposal to divest 10% government stake in Indian Oil Corporation (IOC). The move expected to fetch around Rs. 3,750 crore to the exchequer at the current market price. Currently, the government controls 78.92% stake in IOC.
3. To promote the food processing sector in the country, the Government is implementing infrastructure scheme with components for Mega Food Parks,Cold Chain, Value Addition and Preservation Infrastructure and Modernization of Abattoir which could be availed by farmers for maximization of value addition, minimization of wastages and improving their income.
4. Santosh Koli, the leader of Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Admi Party (AAP) who suffered critical injuries in an accident, succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday night, police said today. Ms Koli was admitted to a Gurgaon hospital after being hit by a speeding car on June 30.
5. The Reserve Bank on Wednesday said it imposed a fine of about Rs 5.6 lakh on State Bank of India (SBI) for violation of currency chest norms.
6. The Government introduced the National Food Security Bill 2013 in the Lok Sabha today. It replaces an Ordinance promulgated earlier. Moving the Bill, Minister for Food and Public Distribution Prof. K V Thomas said food is a basic right.
7. Defence Minister A.K.Antony’s statement on the killing on five soldiers on the Line of Control in Pooch sector led to a furore in both Houses of Parliament on Wednesday with the Opposition accusing him of “exonerating” Pakistan Army of the attack.
8. A thick sheet of ice once covering Mars could explain the formation of over 600 mysterious double-layered craters on the surface of the Red planet, geologists say. The Martian surface was covered with a thick sheet of ice at impact. Ejected material would later slide down steep crater sides and across the ice, forming a second layer, researchers said.
9. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has denied it is investigating players in the Ashes series over alleged attempts by some batsmen to use silicone tape on the edge of their bats to confuse Hotspot technology. Pietersen denies he used silicone tape to fool HotSpot.
10. Seeking to expedite implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST), a Parliamentary panel today gave approval to the legislation while suggesting amendments to provisions relating to tax structure and dispute resolution mechanism among others.
