1. Today is Statistics Day – seventh in a row since 2007. This day calls for strengthening our resolve to revamp the statistical system.
The theme chosen for the 7th Statistics Day, “Labour & Employment Statistics” is extremely relevant in the context of our State where unemployment is a social issue of serious concern.
2. Supreme Court Judge P. Sathasivam will take over as Chief Justice of India (CJI) after the expiry of present incumbent Altamas Kabir’s tenure. Mr. Kabir will retire on July 18, 2013 after having tenure of little over nine months. He was appointed CJI on September 29, 2012.
3. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday proposed a separate wealth management unit for banks involved in wealth & portfolio management services. In its annual monetary policy statement, the RBI suggested the banks to carry out all Wealth Management Services (WMS) activities through a separate subsidiary or via a Separately Identifiable Department or Division established for the purpose.
4. Bimal Jhulka has been appointed as secretary in the information and broadcasting (I&B) ministry. He succeeds U K Varma who retires on June 30.
5. The 64-and-a-half-hour countdown for the launch of PSLV-C22, carrying India’s first dedicated navigation satellite IRNSS-1A on July 1, began today at Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota.
6. Reliance Infra that runs the Delhi Airport Metro line has expressed its inability to continue running Delhi Airport Metro after tomorrow.In a letter, Reliance Infra owned Delhi Airport Metro Private Limited informed Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, DMRC, that it will stop running the Airport Metro from the midnight of 30th June.
The DMRC has however, rejected the notice and asked Reliance Infra to continue the operations of the line.
7. In a reprieve to the suspended Indian Olympic Association, the IOC has decided to extend the deadline for adopting an amended constitution, the draft of which is currently being reviewed by the world body.
8.Malaysian low-cost carrier AirAsia on Saturday said its Indian operations should begin later this year with flights for southern region and the company would also look at setting up some ancillary businesses in the country. The airline would expand its services to other parts of the country in the second stage.
9. Facebook is to crack down on ads running next to offensive material by launching a new system that will create a blacklist of pages and groups that contain any violent, graphic or sexual content, even if it previously passed its community standards.
10. Hindustan Motors, the Kolkata-based automobile manufacturer and the maker of the sturdy Ambassador car, today signed a memorandum of agreement with Isuzu Motors India to contract manufacture its SUVs and multi-purpose pick up trucks from its Thiruvallur plant near Chennai.
