1. M.S. Dhir of AAP elected new Speaker of Delhi Assembly. After a smooth sailing in the confidence vote, AAP on Friday scored yet another victory in the Delhi Assembly when its candidate M S Dhir was elected Speaker with the backing of Congress, JD(U) and an Independent. 37 MLAs voted for Dhir while BJP candidate Jagdish Mukhi got the support of 32 MLAs from his party and ally Akali Dal.

2. Corporation Bank has launched a year-long campaign for the delivery of agriculture credit and financial inclusion initiatives at all its branches. Lending to agriculture and allied activities to farming families and assessing their needs comprehensively will be pursued during the camps at the bank’s branches. The objective of the campaign is to stimulate sustainable development of agricultural systems focused on farming families, community units, self-help groups, and cooperatives working in rural areas, the statement added.

3. Targeting young individuals, public sector Indian Overseas Bank today launched ‘Connect Card’, a new ATM cum Debit card in association with VISA that can be used for e-commerce across five lakh merchant outlets. Though all IOB customers have been provided ATM cum Debit card, Connect Card is targeted at the younger generation aged between 10 and 28 years, the city-based bank said in a statement. IOB Connect cards can be used at over five lakh outlets as well as for online shopping.

4. West Bengal Human Rights Commission chairman Justice A.K. Ganguly on Friday resigned from the post of honorary professor of the National University of Juridical Sciences, a student of which had made allegations of sexual harassment against him.

5. Manoj Vaish appointed as new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd (MCX). Vaish is currently the Managing Director of NSDL Database Management. Tata Sons today announced appointment of Shankar Venkateswaran as Chief — Tata Sustainability Group with the responsibility of driving group level initiatives in the sustainability space, and guiding Tata Sons and the group companies on sustainability and CSR initiatives. Venkateswaran will report directly to Mukund Rajan, Member — Group Executive Council, Brand Custodian and Chief Ethics Officer, Tata Sons, a company statement said.

9. Iron lady Margaret Thatcher has been voted the most successful post-war British Prime Minister by lawmakers in a survey in which Winston Churchill came a distant fourth. The survey was carried out by Politics and International Relations students at Royal Holloway, University of London. The former Conservative leader, who died last April at the age of 87, was valued for her decisiveness by MPs who took part in the poll.

10. Mumbai Police have issued a lookout notice against former world Billiards champion Michael Ferreira after he failed to appear before them in connection with a 425-crore rupees scam. The lookout notice was issued against Ferreira in connection with a multi- level marketing firm QNet, in which he claimed to hold shares.

1. International Migrants Day was observed across the world on 18 December 2013. The number if international migrant worldwide has reached 232 million in 2013. The Secretary General of UN put forward an ambitious eight point agenda in his report to the General Assembly to “make migration work” for all: for all: migrants, societies of origin and societies of destination alike.

2. Reserve Bank of India governor Raghuram Rajan surprised the markets, today, by leaving all key policy rates unchanged. The Reserve Bank, in its Mid-Quarter Monetary Policy Review, kept its short-term lending rate unchanged at 7.75 per cent, and the Cash Reserve Ratio steady at 4 per cent. The RBI governor said the apex bank will take calibrated action in the future, based on inflationary trends and action by the US Federal Reserve.

3. Parliament on Wednesday passed the Lokpal bill with the Lok Sabha adopting the measure as amended by the Rajya Sabha after a short discussion, amid the din created by members for and against the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. Members from Samajwadi Party and Shiv Sena, opposed the bill and staged a walkout in protest, as their counterparts from other parties, including Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and the Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj, supported the measure.

4. The Union Cabinet has approved the Prevention of Communal Violence Bill 2013 yesterday. The bill aimed to prevent and tackle the communal violence in the country and punish the perpetrators of the violence. The Bill has been named as The Prevention of Communal and Targeted Violence (Access to Justice and Reparations) Bill, 2013. The Bill has the provision of creating an institutional arrangement for speedy investigation, disposal of cases and for providing relief and rehabilitation to victims of communal violence.

5. The Rann Utsav,a cultural festival of Gujarat state was inaugurated by Gujarat Tourism Minister Saurabh Patel at Kutch, Gujarat. The two-month long cultural festival that attracts huge number of domestic and international tourists is celebrated from 17 December to 14 February 2014. The Rann of Kutch is a seasonal salt marsh located in the Thar Desert in the Kutch District of Gujarat. Kutch is one of the Gujarat largest districts. It is surrounded by the Arabian Sea and the salt encrusted desert.

6. The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) has appointed M. K. Goel as the new Chairman and

8. India and Macedonia have signed a new double taxation avoidance agreement (DTAA) that provides for among other things exchange of banking information for tax administration purposes. This DTAA was signed by External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid and Macedonia’s Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki here on Tuesday. As per the new agreement, dividend, interest and royalty will be taxed in the source country and the rate of taxation will not exceed 10 percent.

9. The Union Ministry of Power has selected the Poovar Island Resort for the National Energy Conservation Award 2013. M.R. Narayanan, Managing Director, received the award from President Pranab Mukherjee at a function in Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. Kabeer Khader, Chairman, was also present.

10. India and Arab League inked an MoU to elevate the political, trade and cultural relations. The MoU was signed by Salman Khurshid, External Affairs Minister of India and Nabil Elaraby, Secretary General of the League of Arab States during his visit to India.

India clinched the women’s Kabaddi World Cup championship for the third time in a row, defeating debutant New Zealand 49-21 in the summit clash played at Guru Gobind Singh sports complex in Jalandhar on Thursday. The Indian eves led their New Zealand counterparts for most part of the match and held out a strong challenge by the visitors in the second half, on course to a resounding win. The Indian team took home a first-place prize of Rs one crore. Anu Rani was adjudged the best stopper while Ram Bateri was declared the best raider. Both received a Maruti Alto car each.
2. The C Rangarajan panel recommended the guidelines prescribing bailout packages for developers of highway projects and the task of implementation lie with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). The panel recommended that 75% of the premium amount payable to the government will be restricted in the first three years of the contract. The panel’s recommendations, if accepted, will lead to huge reduction in the premium payment in the first years. As a result, it will provide relief to the developers like GMR Infrastructure Ltd and GVK Power and Infrastructure Ltd and 23 other road developers.
3. BJP leader Vasundhara Raje was on 13 December 2013 sworn in as the Chief Minister of Rajasthan for the second time. Vasundh ara Raje was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Margaret Alva during a grand swearing-in ceremony inside the Assembly building premises in Jaipur. Ramnik will report to David Cheesewright, the incoming President and Chief Executive Officer for Walmart International.
5. Eastern Army Command, Lieutenant General Dalbir Singh Suhag on 12 December 2013 was designated as the Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCoAS). He will take over from Lieutenant General SK Singh as the Vice Chief of Army Staff retires on 31 December 2013. He will be replaced by Lieutenant General MMS Rai at the Kolkata based Eastern Army Command. Lieutenant General Arun Kumar Sahni will head the Jaipur-based Southwestern Army Command.

Gujarat will soon have an exclusive sanctuary for cows near Porbandar, the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, and animal “hostels” across the State to shelter cows owned by Maldharis (pastoralists) to keep their cattle away from urban roads. The sanctuary will be developed in a 1,200 hectare area to shelter about 10,000 cows of various breeds in Porbandar taluka. The sanctuary will also have a research and development centre and a plant to manufacture bio and organic fertilisers using cow dung and urine.
7. Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan has been named the ‘most powerful celebrity of 2013′ by Forbes India for the second time in a row. The 48-year-old actor has conquered the Top 100 celebrity list with the help of his popularity and earnings from his mega hit film ‘Chennai Express’ this year. Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni moved up from the third spot last year and has come in at the number two spot with his immense popularity and endorsement deals.

Fodder scam case: The Supreme Court today granted bail to RJD chief Lalu Prasad in a fodder scam case, in a relief to the politician who is behind the bars for the last two months after being awarded a five-year jail term. A bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam granted bail after noting that several other similarly placed convicts have already been granted bail in the case.

The Tata Relief Committee and the Government of Uttarakhand have signed a memorandum of understanding towards community rehabilitation and reconstruction in response to the impact of the floods and landslides in June 2013. The scope of the MoU includes an overall framework within which rehabilitation initiatives are to be implemented across themes of reconstruction, health, vocational skill training and enterprise based livelihoods. It also provides for formal allocation of nine villages across Rudraprayag, Uttarkashi and Pithoragarh to the Tata Relief Committee for overall reconstruction and rehabilitation.
10. Olympic medal-winning boxer M C Kom’s autobiography, titled Unbreakable was unveiled by the Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan on 9 December 2013. The government of India had awarded her with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2009, which is the country’s highest award given to a sportsman. She also received the Arjuna Award in 2003 and Padma Shree Award in 2006. She was also appointed the International Boxing Association’s Ambassador for Women’s Boxing in 2009. She won bronze at Summer Olympics held in London in 2012.
11. Islamist leader Abdul Kader Mullah of Bangladesh was executed on 12 December 2013. His execution was done at the Dhaka Central Jail at 22:01 local time. He was executed for genocides done during the Bangladesh’s 1971 liberation war with Pakistan. He was the first person convicted by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) and the first politician to be hanged for such crimes. He was the senior leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami party.
12. ICC Annual awards: Rising Test batsman Cheteshwar Pujara has bagged the ‘Emerging Cricketer of the Year’ trophy at the ICC Annual awards announced in Dubai today. This is his first ever ICC Award for Pujara who became the second fastest Indian to get 1000 Test runs during the course of his double hundred against Australia in March at Hyderabad. Another Indian to win ICC Annual award is Mahendra Singh Dhoni who gets LG People’s Choice award. In total, there are eleven individual awards.
13. Devyani Khobragade, Deputy Consul General at the Indian Consulate here was today arrested for allegedly presenting fraudulent documents in support of a visa application for an Indian national employed by her, Manhattan’s top federal prosecutor Preet Bharara said. Khobragade is currently employed as the Deputy Consul General for Political, Economic, Commercial and Women’s Affairs at the Consulate General of India in New York.

Raman Singh has become the fourth chief minister of Chhattisgarh that came into existence in November 2000.
3. After a landslide victory in Mizoram Assembly polls, Lal Thanhawla will be sworn in for a second consecutive term as the Chief Minister on Saturday. Lal Thanhawla (71) and members of his council of ministers will be administered the oath of office by Governor Vakkom B Purushothaman at a ceremony which would begin at 11 am at the Raj Bhavan in Aizawl, a communique said on Thursday.
4. Banks might adopt Aadhaar as additional authentication or move to EMV (Euro pay MasterCard Visa) chip and pin technology to ensure security in card-based payment transactions, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) suggested. The central bank also said that all new card present infrastructures must be enabled with EMV chip and Pin technology as well as Aadhaar acceptance. The notification is based on Gowri Mukherjee-headed working group’s recommendation. Mukherjee is the global head of digital marketing at Standard Chartered Bank.
5. Doha Bank has been granted the license to start its banking operations in India. The bank has been permitted to open a branch in Mumbai to provide full-scale banking services. This was announced by the Chairman of Doha Bank Board of Directors Sheikh Fahad Bin Mohammad Bin Jabor Al-Thani in Doha. Doha Bank now becomes the first Qatari bank to get the license from the Reserve Bank of India to start operations in India. The bank plans to start its operations soon as a Foreign Bank branch in the city of Mumbai. It will offer wholesale banking, retail banking, treasury and trade finance services.
6. Wipro has received the ‘2013 ESCAP-Sasakawa Award for Disability-Inclusive Business in Asia and the Pacific’, in the category ‘Disability-Inclusive Multinational Enterprise’. The award for Disability-Inclusive Business was established by ESCAP in cooperation with The Nippon Foundation (TNF) and the Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD) to recognise and honour companies that have made a significant breakthrough in engaging and hiring people with disabilities in their daily operations. The award is an initiative that views persons with disabilities as an untapped workforce.
7. India and the UAE are set to sign an agreement for promotion and protection of bilateral investments. Bilateral Investment Protection Agreement (BIPA), to be signed next week in New Delhi, will provide a comprehensive framework to investors from both the countries, the outgoing Ambassador of India to the UAE M K Lokesh said on Sunday.
8. Afghan President Hamid Karzai arrived in New Delhi Thursday afternoon on a four day official visit to India. A press release issued by the President’s office in Kabul last evening said he will meet Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid and hold talks on various aspects of bilateral cooperation under the long term strategic partnership treaty between the two countries. Afghan President is also scheduled to meet the Indian business and industry leaders in Pune.
9. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd lost its case to have certain products by Apple Inc banned in South Korea Thursday when a Seoul court ruled the US manufacturer had not violated Samsung patents. Samsung in March 2012 filed for damages and a sales ban on some iPhone and iPad models, saying Apple had breached three patents on technology for handling and displaying text and messages from its flagship Galaxy product range.

Nearly 230 million children under the age of five around the world have never had their birth registered, which often means they will be barred from education, health care and social security, the UN children’s agency said. A report by UNICEF to mark its 67th birthday on December 11 said that globally it amounts to one in three children under five.

Star batsman Virat Kohli lost his top position to AB de Villiers while most of his teammates, barring skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, also slipped in the latest ICC one-day rankings issued on Thursday after the 0-2 series loss to South Africa. De Villiers is the third batsman from South Africa after Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla to head the Test and ODI batting tables at the same time, and the ninth player overall. Amla achieved the distinction in February this year when he topped the charts after the Johannesburg Test against Pakistan.
