1- Sweden general election 2014: Social Democrats with their centre-left allies emerge as the largest coalition; puts the centre-right incumbents out of power. The coalition led by Stefan Lofven garnered over 43 percent votes and will need further support to get the required majority to run the government.

2- Indian shuttler HS Prannoy clinches Indonesian Masters Grand Prix Gold title by defeating Firman Abdul Kholik of host country with a scoreline of 21-11, 22-20 in the final. Its the first major title for the Keralite in senior category. He is the third Indian to bag a GP Gold title this year after Saina Nehwal and Arvind Bhat.

3- Veteran educationist Kireet Joshi passes away aged 83. He had served as the education advisor to the central government in 1976 during emergency.

4- Nation observed Hindi Diwas on September 14. The day commemorates the adoption of Hindi as an official language by the Constituent Assembly on this very day in 1949.

5- Centre is taking help of technology as one of the measures to bring down soaring food inflation. Agriculture Ministry has launched a call centre for reefer vehicles who handles much of the transportation of perishable goods, mostly food items. It seeks to address their grievances and challenges, arising primarily due to red tape.

1. Centre asks UNMOGIP to vacate its Delhi office; can continue its activity from Srinagar. United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) was meant to supervise the ceasefire line established under the Karachi Agreement of July 1949. The free-of-charge government accommodation – 1AB, Purana Qila Road – a Type VII bungalow spread over 7000 square feet — was allotted to the UN mission on a temporary basis.

2. NASA to launch world’s first flying observatory aboard a Boeing 747 jetliner in 2015. The telescope called “Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy” (SOFIA) will have a life-span of 20 years. Its mobility will equip it to spot transient space events like supernovae and comets. The telescope, built with the help from German Aerospace Centre (DLR), can easily be repaired or reprogrammed when necessary.

3. C Rangarajan panel revises poverty line at Rupees 32 per day in rural areas and Rupees 47 in Urban areas. It means that a person spending below the given marks should be considered a poor. The panel puts 29.5% of the population below the poverty line which is an improvement from 38.2% in 2009-10. arlier, Tendulkar Committee report had set the poverty line at 26 and 33 rupees per day for rural and urban areas respectively.

4. Eduard Shevardnadze, former President of Georgia and a renowned Soviet Foreign Minister, is dead at 86. He was the diplomatic face of Mikhail Gorbachev’s liberalising policies of glasnost and perestroika. He played key role in many decisions that brought the Cold War to end like withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan in 1989, signing of landmark arms control agreements, and in the German reunification in 1990.

5. Granville Austin, eminent scholar of the Indian constitution, passes away aged 87. His two books, “The Indian Constitution: Cornerstone of a Nation” (1966) and “Working a Democratic Constitution: The Indian Experience” (2000) gives the best account of formation, evolution and working of Indian Constitution. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2011 for his contribution.

6. Major General Delali Johnson Sakyi of Ghana is the new Chief Military Observer and head of the UNMOGIP (United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan). He replaces Young-Bum Choi of South Korea as such.

7. Wal-Mart is the largest company in the world by revenue: Fortune The oil giant Royal Dutch Shell has been dislodged from the pole position by the retail major Wal-Mart as the world’s biggest company in terms of revenue generation. The annual global report published by Fortune also accomodate a small contingent of 8 Indian companies led by Indian Oil Corporation (96th) in the top 500 list.

4. India’s Mars orbiter spacecraft has completed 75 per cent of its journey for its rendezvous with the red planet scheduled for September 24. The spacecraft has covered a distance of approximately 510 million kilometres on its heliocentric arc towards Mars capture, Bangalore headquartered ISRO said.

5. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the 240-Megawatt Uri-II Hydro Electric Project (HEP) located near the Line of Control (LoC) in Baramulla district of Kashmir. The Prime Minister dedicated the power project to the nation in presence of Jammu and Kashmir Governor N.N. Vohra, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and top officials of National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC).

6. Government proposes amendments to NCW Act. The Centre has proposed to appoint a Director General of Police (DGP) level officer in the National Commission for Women (NCW) to “improve its quality of investigation”.

7. The Union, State and Union Territory governments unanimously resolve to work together to provide housing for all by the year 2022. Housing and construction industry supports more than 250 ancillary industries and contributes 9% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country.

6. “Bank of Maharashtra” is conferred on the “Best Bank – Public Sector” award in BFSI Awards 2014 by World HRD Congress in recognition of its performance in Banking category. 5. Indian shooter Jitu Rai, riding high on three medals won in the recent ISSF World Cups in Munich and Slovenia, romps to world number one ranking in air pistol event. 5. French bank BNP Paribas has been penalized with a fine of $8.83 billion for violating US sanctions imposed on Sudan, Iran and Cuba. BNP had taken steps to evade sanctions between 2004 and 2012 and was found guilty on two counts of ‘falsifying business records’ and ‘conspiracy’.

6. 58 million children still out of school: UNESCO

    The latest UNESCO report put the global number of unschooled children aged 6 to 11 at as high as 58 million.
    The lack of global progress is largely due to high population growth in Sub-Saharan Africa, which is now home to more than 30 million out-of-school children.
    The report says that close to 43% of those out of school children – 15 million girls and 10 million boys – will probably never see the classroom if the situation does not improve.

5. Somasundaram of Airports Authority of India (AAI) is honoured with the prestigious Bharat Ratna JRD Tata Award for 2013 by the Aeronautical Society of India (ASI). He is credited with improving ANS infrastructure in the country for enhancing safety, efficiency and capacity of the airspace.

6. Kolkata Airport won the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Award by Airport Council International (ACI) in the category of the best improved airport in Asia Pacific Region. The category includes airports that have experienced the biggest improvement in ASQ rating between 2012 and 2013 in their region.
